Forensic Nurses in Allen County Texas for FACE

Forensic Nurses in the Fort Wayne area have formed a new organization called the Forensic Advocacy Center for Elders (FACE). This organization, the first of its kind in the state, seeks to provide the same support and expertise that the nurses have been providing to the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center – only this organization seeks to shine a light on elder abuse issues. An article in the Fort Wayne News Sentinel highlights this new organization.

In March 2011, 90 year old Mickey Rooney testified before Congress on elder abuse he alleges he received at the hands of his stepson and stepson’s wife. The article notes that the Senate Aging Committee is seeking creation of a new Office of Elder Justice within the U.S. Department of Justice, along with funding to beef up investigation in elder abuse cases.

With America’s population aging at an aggressive rate, these issues are of concern to forensic nurses, geriatric care managers, life care planners and many other healthcare professionals.

What is Forensic Nursing?

Forensic Nursing plays an integral role in bridging the gap between health care and the legal system. Forensic nurses provide care for patients who have been involved in a violent crime, whether they be victims or perpetrators of the crime. This type of nurse offers psychological, physical and social care and collects evidence to use in court.

The most common use of forensic nursing in the United States is in sexual assault cases. Other branches of forensic nursing deal with domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect, death investigation, mistreatment of the elderly, corrections, emergency services and mental health.
